To get want the length of a half-wavelength antenna in inches based on a given wavelength.

Now that we have our frequency (50 MHz), let’s use the tried-and-true formula for a half-wavelength antenna: 468 / frequency in MHz = antenna length in feet. 468 / 50 MHz = 9.36 feet. To convert to inches, take 9.36 feet x 12 = 112.32 inches.

An antenna analyzer measures whether an antenna is resonant at the desired operating frequency. It puts out a tiny signal to determine the reactance, impedance, standing wave ratio and resonant frequency of the antenna being evaluated. In some cases it can detect a cable fault in your feed line.

Modes of modulation

FCC Rule §2.201 on emission types:

A space station is any amateur state more than 50 km above earth. Satellites (such as SpaceX) at “Low Earth Obit” (LEO) are from 160 km (100 miles) but never more than about one-third of the radius of Earth about 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi). In mode U/V, the satellite uplink is in the 70-centimeter band and the downlink is in the 2-meter band. Your signal strength on the downlink should be about the same as the beacon.

No music can be transmitted except to the Space Station 50 km above earth.

Most VHF power amplifiers are multimode: operate SSB, CW, and FM.

At frequencies below 29.7 MHz, which includes all HF bands, the maximum bandwidth for a RTTY or data emission is 2.8khz.

Multi-band radio

Retail radios have a short antenna that cannot be swapped out, so are limited to a range of about a mile.

HF reception depends on many factors, such as location, time of year, time of day, the frequency being used, and atmospheric and ionospheric propagation conditions.

The RF signal received by the receiver and passes through the frequency modulation demodulator, often referred to as a frequency discriminator circuit in analog mode. The demodulated result is a C4FM baseband signal whose amplitude varies between four voltage levels. After logical judgment and transformation of the level, a two-digit binary digit sequence is obtained. In order to improve the anti-interference performance, the process of extracting the digital signal from the four-level waveform usually uses a certain algorithm instead of using a simple voltage comparator. It is not substantially different from the well-known traditional analog FM, except that it is not an analog signal of voice that modulates the radio frequency input signal, but a digital signal with only four-level states.

As with D-STAR, C4FM uses FDMA (???) digital modulation mode with channel interval at 12.5 kHz. C4FM FDMA provides a data transfer rate of 9.6 kbps.

A typical 50-watt output mobile FM transceiver, an appropriate power supply rating would be 13.8 volts at 12 amperes. For that a 10-ampere power supply is sufficient. (12 volts X 10 amperes = 120 watts, which is greater than the 50 watts of the radio).

Sensitivity is the ability of a receiver to detect the presence of a signal. Parameters affecting receiver sensitivity:

Transverter

A transverter converts RF input and output of a transceiver to another band. It functions via a mixer used to convert radio signals from one frequency to another. For example, from 10-meter to 2-meter or 70-centimeters & back.

The mixer circuit converts a radio signal from one frequency to another. Two RF signals mixed together gets two additional frequencies. One will be the sum of the two frequencies and the other will be the difference of the two signals. So if you mix together a 5-MHz frequency and a 3-MHz frequency, you will get an 8-MHz frequency and a 2-MHz frequency. 5 MHz + 3 MHz = 8 MHz (sum) and 5 MHz - 3 MHz = 2 MHz (difference).

A transistor is an electronic gate. It is composed of three layers of semiconductor material configured to dope with N and P dopants:

A bipolar junction transistor allows a small current at one terminal to control larger current at its other terminals allowing for amplification or switching. Energy passing from the collector to emitter is controlled by the base.

A transister is the only component in an RF power amplifier that produces gain.

A FET (Field-effect transistor) are commonly found in amateur radio receivers because of their efficiency in the RF ranges. They use an electric field to control the flow of current. It’s a unipolar transistor. Its gate is used to control the current passing between the source and the drain.

The “skin effect”: In AC circuits, current flows on the outside of the conductor.

Inductance is the ability to store energy in a magnetic field. The basic unit of inductance is the henry.

An inductor stores electrical energy in a magnetic field when current flows through it. Generally, the more turns of a coil, the higher the inductance. Inductors are made of a coil of wire such as from small copper tubing. So inductors are also called chokes or coils.

A capacitor stores electrical energy in an electrical circuit. Its symbol is a line and a frown. The conductive surfaces of a capacitor may be foil, film or metal separated by glass, ceramic, air or other elements that provide insulation.

An LC circuit – a L (inductor) and a C (capacitor) connected in series or parallel to form a filter – is a resonant or tuned circuit.

A relay is an electrically-controlled electromagnet to switch current flow. Mechanical contacts control the flow of larger current.

SPDT (single pole, double throw) switches have a single input and two outputs. They are used as a “low / high” switch in a circuit.

Digital modes

There are two different approaches:

Packet radios use the AX.25 protocol standard based on the X.25 protocol. The “A” in AX.25 stands for amateur radio.

Ohm’s Law

Ohm’s Law states that voltage (E) equals current (I) multiplied by resistance (R).

The flow rate of one coulomb per second is equal to one amp of current.

Capacitance is the ability to store energy in an electric field and is measured in farads. The component in a circuit for this is a capacitor.

Electrical Power

The power of electrical audio signals is measured in db (decibels) on a logrithmic scale. Logrithmically means increases are exponential.

Power is the rate at which electrical energy is consumed (converted to heat). A 40-watt bulb uses more power than a 100-watt bulb.

Electrical Power

P (power watts) = E (volts) multiplied by I (current in amps).

A transformer steps down 120 volts AC house current to a lower AC voltage for other uses. There also are step-up transformers. In a diagram: The left-hand side of the transformer is the primary winding. The right hand side is the secondary winding.

A regulator regulates the amount of voltage from a power supply. So it’s also called a voltage regulator. Some power supply designs use a single chip while others use many separate and independent components.

A rectifier changes an alternating current into a varying direct current signal. A rectifier is composed of diodes that direct the flow of current into specific directions in the electronic circuit. The diode allows current to flow in only one direction.

The diode is classified as a semiconductor. In the forward direction, a minimum amount of voltage, called the voltage drop, is required to have the diode conduct current.

Within a diode, current flows into the anode and out of the cathode.

Because different materials are used in diodes, voltage drop is lower in some diode types.

The most difficult LED (Light Emmitting Diode) to make are purple in color.

In power supplies it sends the positive side of the alternating current’s sine wave to one part of the circuit and the negative side to another part of the circuit.

Batteries

Carbon-zinc batteries are not rechargeable. The chemical reactions that produce the electricity are not reversible.

When using lead-acid 12V batteries used in most autos and trucks, keep its voltage above 10.5 Volts to avoid shortening the battery’s life.

Always start on a higher scan and slowly work down.

A dummy load uses a non-inductive resistor mounted on a heat sink. This simulates an antenna and helps avoid potential interference so you can test for as long as necessary, based on the dummy load’s rating.

A variable resistor of ohms is called a potentiometer (not a measurement device). It has three electrical connections.

If only two connections are used, the device is called a rheostat.

Good rosin solder joints are shiny rather than “gray” or dull.

Acid-core solder should NEVER be used for radio and electronic use. Cold tin-lead solder (made for steel and other metals) result in a rough or lumpy surface.

Antennas

“Isotropic” antennas measures gain in dBi directionally.

So lower power on Yagi antennas, which takes a signal from a driven element down the boom to the director element. Satellite antennas have 30 or more directors to narrow the beam.

The azimuth is set by the number of elements on the boom.

Narrow the main lobe in elevation by stacking a Yagi a half-wavelength apart for gain 3dB higher than a single Yagi.

Gain in dBi is 25 dB higher than gain in dBd.

Dipole antennas measure gain in dBd.

To get the approximate length of a half-wavelength dipole (named for the Japanese who invented it), divide 468 by the frequency in megahertz:

For 6 meter with 50 Megahertz.  So 468 / 50 MHz = 9.36 Feet or 112.32 inches. If we need to calculate a quarter-wavelength, we can use half of 468 which is 234.   For 2 Meter, calculate 468 / 146 MHz is 3.20 feet or 38.4 inches for a half-wavelength dipole.  Take half of that to get a quarter-wavelength and you get 19.2 inches. Or 234 / 146 MHz = 1.60 Feet or 19.2 inches.

The tried-and-true formula for quarter-wavelength antennas is divide 234 by the frequency in MHz. 234 / frequency in MHz = Antenna length in feet. Therefore, 234 / 146 MHz = 1.602 feet. To convert feet to inches, multiply by 12. Therefore, 1.602 feet x 12 = 19.2 inches.
